MOORHEAD, Minn. — September 23, 2026 (Minnesota Nice News)
Austin creative director Matt Dawson, who has designed for Jeep, Major League Baseball, Pearl Jam and Disney, brings his talk “Beyond the Brief” to Minnesota State University Moorhead on Tuesday, Oct. 20.
The American Advertising Federation of North Dakota hosts the lunch event in Room 105 of the Comstock Memorial Union. Doors open at 11:15 a.m. and lunch is served at 11:30, which answers the first question any Minnesotan asks about an event, usually before asking what the event is.
AAF-ND President Tate Hovland welcomes the crowd and introduces Dawson at 11:55 a.m. Dawson speaks from noon to 12:45 p.m., then joins Hovland for a question-and-answer session until 1 p.m.
Beyond the Brief: The projects nobody asked for
Most creative work starts with a brief, the set of instructions a client hands over before the real work begins. Dawson’s talk is about everything else: the projects you make because you can, because you want to or because you simply cannot stop thinking about them.
Minnesotans already understand this. Every cul-de-sac from Moorhead to Grand Marais has a garage where somebody is building a cedar-strip canoe nobody commissioned, and every church basement has a quilter working on a pattern purely out of stubbornness. According to the event description, those unassigned projects are the ones that reconnect people with why they started creating in the first place, and now and then they open doors nobody saw coming. The Golden Girls would have toasted that idea with a slice of cheesecake.
Dawson has been at it since college. He told CanvasRebel Magazine in 2023 that his program never taught design software, so he learned it by trial and error on an aging Apple laptop. “Outside of college projects, I’d give myself projects,” he said.
Meet the designer behind Beyond the Brief
Dawson grew up in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and found graphic design at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. He works under the studio name Stay Gray, Ponyboy, and his focus is brand identities, logos, illustration and typography.
Over 20 years he has worked with global brands, scrappy startups and a few bands readers may have on vinyl, including Pearl Jam and Phish. His client list also includes Toyota, Adobe, Under Armour and the Atlanta Braves. His work has appeared in books, magazines and blogs, and he speaks on stages across the country.
He also founded Crop, a creative conference with a punk rock spirit. Dawson and his wife, Ariadne, launched it in Baton Rouge in 2016, and it has since settled in Austin, where he moved from Atlanta in 2019. Crop has drawn more than 3,000 creatives from 35 states and six countries for keynote talks, hands-on workshops, vendors, live music and parties. Organizers describe its reputation as a “come as you are” event where first-timers feel like regulars from the first handshake.
When he steps away from the screen, Dawson plays music, catches shows, paddles a kayak and hunts for the next great taco, according to his studio website. Moorhead can offer him plenty of water. The taco search will be a fair test of Red River Valley hospitality.
The group bringing Beyond the Brief to MSUM
AAF-ND has supported the region’s advertising and marketing community for more than 50 years. It is one of more than 130 local affiliates of the American Advertising Federation and part of AAF’s 8th District, which covers seven clubs in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. The chapter serves professionals and students across North Dakota and western Minnesota.
Its calendar runs on speaker events like this one, and every one includes a meal. The group also hosts the region’s American Advertising Awards, held Feb. 27 this year at the Avalon Events Center in Fargo. Students are welcome at its events, a fitting audience for a talk about the projects that come before anyone hands you a brief.
