A Prairie Home Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church Cass Lake

CASS LAKE, Minn. — July 19, 2026 (Minnesota Nice News)

Some mornings just feel like Garrison Keillor wrote them. A Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church Cass Lake was one.

The sign out front says it twice: “All Are Welcome Here” in English and “Gidanimikoonigoom” in Ojibwe. After one morning in the pews, we can report the congregation means it both ways.

Trinity sits on Highway 2 just west of town, a tan clapboard church with a white steeple, a flag snapping in the breeze and a flower bed out front that somebody clearly loves. Sunday worship starts at 10:30 a.m. Show up at 10:25 and you are right on time. Show up at 10:15 and you get to hear about everyone’s tomatoes.

A church with Norwegian roots

The congregation was founded in February 1921 under the name Treifaldighets Norsk Evangelisk Menighet, which is Norwegian for “Trinity” plus about 30 more letters. Services ran mostly in Norwegian until 1934, when English finally won out. Somewhere up in the Lake Wobegon of heaven, a bachelor farmer is still grumbling about it.

Today Trinity is part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the Northeastern Minnesota Synod. Its stated core values are Welcome, Worship, Support and Connect, and the welcome part starts in the parking lot.

Hymns with a little extra pep

The organist played with a little extra pep, the kind that makes you suspect he had one eye on the hymnal and one on the Twins’ first pitch. Nobody minded. Up here, that is just good time management. He also slipped in the occasional trumpet flourish, which kept everyone awake and a few of us grinning.

Beauty and toxicity on the same stem

Afterward the talk turned to gardens: how the loveliest plants can also be the most dangerous, and how beauty and toxicity sometimes grow on the same stem. Foxglove can stop a heart or save one, depending on the hands it’s in. Lily of the valley smells like a June wedding and belongs nowhere near the salad.

There’s a whole sermon in that, and it preached itself over the occasional organist’s trumpet inserts. A beautiful time.

Go in peace, serve the Lord at Trinity Lutheran Church Cass Lake

A scroll-style sign beside the main one sends visitors off with “Go in Peace, Serve the Lord.” It is good advice for a Sunday, and just as good on a Tuesday. If you’re passing through Cass Lake on a Sunday, service is at 10:30. Bring a neighbor.
